Carpentry and Joinery in Al Ain

Good joinery is mostly decided before anything is cut. Get the material wrong for the conditions and a wardrobe that looked perfect on handover will have lifted veneer and split panels within two summers.

Choosing materials for inland conditions

This is where Al Ain differs from the coast, and where most of the long-term outcome is decided.

Al Ain is inland and dry. Relative humidity falls to around 21% in May, considerably lower than coastal Abu Dhabi or Dubai, and the swing between the dry early summer and the more humid winter months is wide. Timber moves with moisture content, and that swing is what drives failure here.

Solid timber moves. In dry inland air it loses moisture and shrinks, opening joints and producing splits along panels — particularly wide panels held rigidly at both edges. Solid timber is the right choice for some things, but it has to be detailed to allow movement rather than fixed as though it will stay still.

Veneer lifts when the substrate or the adhesive is wrong. Veneered board in a hot, dry interior, especially anywhere catching direct sun through glazing, will delaminate at edges and corners if the adhesive specification was not up to it. This is the single most common failure we are called to repair, and it is almost always a specification problem, not a usage problem.

MDF and chipboard are stable in dry air but unforgiving when wet. They hold dimension well in Al Ain's dry conditions, which makes them good for wardrobe carcasses and general interior work. They swell irreversibly if they get wet, which makes them a poor choice under a sink or in a bathroom unless properly edged and sealed on every face — including the cut edges people never seal.

Moisture-resistant board and marine ply belong in wet areas. Kitchen sink bases, bathroom vanities and anywhere a leak is plausible.

Direct sun matters as much as humidity. A wardrobe on a west-facing wall in Al Ain experiences conditions a wardrobe two metres away does not. We take that into account when specifying finishes.

4. Manufacture.
5. Install. Scribed to the walls, which in older Al Ain villas are rarely square
6. Snag and hand over. Doors and drawers adjusted, alignment checked with you present

Repairs, before you replace

A lot of what gets thrown away is repairable. Failed soft-close hinges, drawer runners, a swollen sink base panel, lifted edge banding, a sagging shelf — all are cheaper to fix than to replace, and we will say so when that is the case. Where the carcass itself has broken down, we will tell you replacement is the better spend.
